Chasing Colin Firth

Last week, my good friend MK (initials used to protect the fangirl) called and asked if I wanted to go walking.  Sure. In downtown Raleigh. Well, our neighborhood is closer, but okay. Because Colin Firth aka Mr. Darcy was filming a movie. What?!!!!

Hullo, Fangirls.

That's right, the man who embodies the very essence of one of the most swoon-worthy characters of all time, was going to be in our capitol. We might even be able to get a picture, or at least stalk the production crew and beg for one.  Though their response might be something like this:

You wanna do what?
However, MK and I were not deterred. We persevered and got shots of our future husband favorite actor like these:

Why yes, this is my natural stance.

He doesn't have a bad side. Ever.

Then it happened, our eyes met:

But of course we quickly looked away. Mostly so he wouldn't think MK and I were stalkers, which we were, but... Anyway, after grabbing a bite to eat and heading over to a park where the next scene would be filmed, MK and I found a familiar face. One that was just as excited as the two of us that Colin Firth was here:

Erin Knightley and I
Suddenly, there was a commotion. MK waved furiously and smiled. People gasped. The man beside me fainted. Colin Firth was headed our way!! And let me tell you, the man is GORGEOUS. And gracious. And tall. And smells like a dream.  We were stunned, then giddy, but the crowd didn't rush him.

Instead we gently pushed the sweetest woman to the front, one who'd been waiting for Mr. Darcy since six am. He smiled. She teared up. Then he HUGGED her.

Of course Erin Knightley and I chose to celebrate like this:

Not ashamed.
MK, the intrepid instigator of the entire trip, stood back patiently waiting her turn. Not only did she get a picture, but he also signed her copy of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. I would post her picture with Colin, but she threatened to never speak to me again. So, I'll post mine:

MK, Erin Knightley and I skipped to our cars, goofy as hell girlish grins on our faces. We said our goodbyes and headed home, discussing our favorite movies starring Colin Firth, marveling over how nice he was, and giggling over how we both got hugs.

What famous person have you met? And, of course, what's your favorite Colin Firth movie?

Mission Accomplished

  1. The closest I've gotten to a famous person (besides our own Sabrina Jeffries which took a while to get over the fangirl thing) was listening to Bill Clinton speak in Reynold's Coliseum on NC State's campus while he was campaigning.

He wasn't nearly as handsome and I have no pictures. ;)

  2. I have met absolutely no one famous. :-( These pictures are absolutely delightful. What a fun experience.

  3. I got to meet Pacey when I was in college...(Joshua Jackson to all you who didn't obsess over Dawson's Creek). He was checking out at the grocery line. Sigh. I met Jack Hanna in High School. I was a dorky kid who loved animals so I was super excited. It was in Subway and he signed my napkin. Yes, I still have it.

Oh and I just so happen to know the author of this post so hellooooo major famousness there!

Great post and another reason why North Carolina is one of the most awesome states ever...its cheap to film there so we get lots of Hollywood types!

  4. In a Vegas casino, I walked face first into Toby Keith's chest. Heck, it wasn't until his security goons pulled me back that I realized it was his meaty chest I'd slammed into.

Sadly, it was late and I was not in the proper frame of mind to ask for a photo. Or a hug. He did smile and tell the heavies to let me go. Sigh, it was Vegas...free drinks.

  5. @Beth- Since I've joined RWA and Heart of Carolina, I've got to meet lots of famous authors that made my heart do gymnastic moves in my chest, too! :)

Yeah, I think Bill Clinton's charisma is what makes him *attractive* to people, not his looks. :))

    Thanks for stopping by!

  6. @Joselyn - It was a great experience- one that I'll remember for a long time! Maybe one day you'll meet someone famous, too! hee!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  7. @Samantha- Only one more famous person to go and I'll have caught up to you, ;p.

One day I hope to be famous, but right now I'll settle for the notorious LadyScribe, hee!

And I'm partial to NC, too!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  8. @Mari- OOOH, that sounds like something straight out of a romance novel. ;)

I think he could have bought you a drink, though. As you said, drinks are free in Vegas.

  9. Back when I used to manage a movie theater in the DFW area, but not IN Dallas, a bunch of professional athletes in the area would come out to watch movies at my theater. So, I've met brand-new NHL Hall of Famer Eddie Belfour, soon-to-be NHL Hall of Famer Mike Modano, and even the incomparable MLB pitcher Nolan Ryan.

And then when I managed a massage company in Dallas, one of my massage therapists was NFL star Michael Irvin's personal massage therapist, so I've talked to him on multiple occasions. He's a very, very nice man.

I have not met anyone like Colin Firth, however. Oh, but they filmed Necessary Roughness in my town back in the day, and I spent some time in the football stands as a hopeful extra, and I got to hug Sinbad and Jason Bateman. Does that count? LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Catherine I bet there's a ton of women that want to touch you!!! Probably some men, too, but for entirely different reasons. LOL!

It's always nice to find out that celebs that *seem* nice really are. :)

And heck yeah, Sinbad and Jason Bateman count. I have a serious crush on JB!!!! Arrested Development anyone?

    Thanks for stopping by!

  11. You, Erin, and MK are MOVIE STARS! Wow. May I touch you, please?

My brush with fabulousness was on Earth Day 1991 in Washington DC when I checked LL Cool J into his hotel room (I worked at the front desk) and he called me "Baby". And once I ate at a table three spots away from Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. in a very small restaurant in Santa Monica. And once Jeremy Northam's hotel room was two down the hall from mine (we saw him on the balcony). Yes, those are all pathetic compared to HUGGING Colin Firth, oh my!

  12. I seem to only get to meet people BEFORE they are famous, lol! James Van Der Beek (Dawson) went to my very small private school, so I saw him every day. He's very nice, and was very quiet and fairly shy -unless he got on stage. Then the actor came out and he let it all go! And at the same time, we also went to school with Talib Kweli, who is one half of the socially conscious rap duo Black Star -the other half is Mos Def. He is super smart, really sweet and my friend Amy and I used to hang with him. He taught me how to dread my hair, which was pretty funny, since I have very, very fine, straight hair. I saw Colin from about 50 ft away, but didn't get his picture or anything. Sigh.

  13. @Katharine- You may borrow my shirt any time you like, snort!

LL Cool J, BUFFY and her husband AND Jeremy Northam?! You, m'dear are supremely lucky!!!!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  14. @olivia- How cool (and strange) to go to school with someone you later see in movies, music videos and/or on tv!

Did you go to FAME? hee hee!

Next time, I'm sure you'll be able to get Colin's pic. He has to come back, right?

    Thanks for stopping by!

  15. It was all like a dream *sigh* He is by far my most favorite celebrity meet. My friend Ashley is a regular on Bold and Beautiful, as well as acting in the 2nd season of True Blood. Two years ago she took me to a big-time Grammy after party, where she introduced me to . . . wait for it . . . Gerard Butler!! *fans self* Oh, that accent :)

I also met the guy who played Laurent in Twilight (bad guy vamp - super nice in person) and James Marsdon. Ryan Phillipe, Taylor Lautner, Brittany Spears, the cast of Entourage, and many more were there, but I didn't actually talk to them.

I still have my eye on Hugh Jackman - maybe some day I'll get a hug from him too!

  16. How come I didn't hear about him coming to Raleigh? I missed out and I could cry. Oh, well, at least you ladies got the photos of a lifetime. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  17. @Erin- We-elll, I didn't know I was with a professional, hee!

It's always the accent, isn't it. Gets a girl's heart fluttering every time.

And the next time you're invited to a Grammy after party, consider me at your +1, k? ;)

    Thanks for stopping by!

  18. @Nancy- I wouldn't have heard if it hadn't been for MK. Totally clueless. :)

  19. And btw, you're welcome for making Colin smile for your picture - that first one I took was dreadful! ;)

  20. I, too, was fortunate enough to meet Firth several years ago. I found him delightful. What was the crowning moment though was when he noticed the rubber bracelet I wore on my right wrist. When he inquired of it, I happily showed him how it says, "I Love Matthew Macfadyen." Firth laughed heartily and said, "That is bloody sacrilegious." (For those who do not know, Macfadyen played Darcy in the Keira Knightley film.)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh, I hate, hate, hate that I was going out of town that day and couldn't go with ya'll. :(

Let's see... back in my screenwriting days, I used to go to Sundance Film Festival each year. And there are tons of stars there. So... I've met Gwyneth Paltrow (and bumped into Brad Pitt), sat right behind Julianne Moore, right in front of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.... the list could go on and on and on... Oh, and I had a very nice conversation with Billy Bob Thornton at the Telluride Film Festival when Slingblade premiered there.

As fo Colin Firth films.. P&P was a miniseries (otherwise you HAVE to say that. I mean he was and always will be Mr. Darcy.) But for theatrical releases... I love, love, love LOVE ACTUALLY. Such a wonderful film. I could watch it on a regular basis and never get tired. :)

  22. I am SO jealous that y'all met Colin Firth!!! So jealous.

Regina, that's HILARIOUS. I love Matthew MacFadyen, too.

Ava, I love Love Actually, too. One of my favorite Christmas movies of all time! I watch it every year and cry.

I have never met any famous actors/actresses. Never. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Regina- OMGosh, that is so funny! I've read that Colin Firth has a wicked sharp since of humor. And his voice is beautiful.

    Thanks for stopping by!

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Ava- I wish you could have been there, too. Weirdly enough, Erin and I didn't plan to meet there. :)

But now I know who my go-to peeps are for meeting celebs. Speaking of which, when's the next time you're heading to Sundance...

    Thanks for stopping by!

  25. OMG, how awesome is that??? What a blast! Glad you were able to meet (my future 2nd husband--sorry to husband #1!) Mr. Darcy! That is too cool :) Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Sabrina- You touched the shoulder he oh, so gently clasped in his hand, so... ;p

Love Actually makes me cry, too. And laugh. That guy who travels to America, goes to a local bar w/his English accent and gets all the hot girls makes me giggle every time!!!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  27. @Eliza- I'm afraid there's too many of us and only 1 of him.

All those in favor of cloning? :)

  28. @Erin- HA!!! He wasn't even looking at the camera!

    HUGS to you!

  29. Oh you lucky wenches! I'm sure I would have swooned for sure! But I did once meet the Monkees, and their whole families when they came into the little family restaurant I worked at and another time Rod Serling came in, as well as several singers that were way too young for me to get all worked up! But Colin Firth...can't beat that!

  30. What a great story! I'm so glad to know he's a nice guy in person. Can you believe I didn't have a clue who he was until Bridget Jones's Diary, which I loved! Loved the book, too! So, while he's Mr. Darcy from P&P to everyone else, he's Mark Darcy to me. :)

Famous people I've met... I have a picture with Tina Turner. My high school boyfriend's dad was a big-wig with Pepsi, so we got to go backstage. My dad went to high school with Bill Clinton, and his graduating class was invited to the White House for a reception. Somewhere there is a picture with Hillary Clinton's arm around me. Oh, and Bill's in there someplace. ;)

  31. how lovely! Let's see I went to a book signing at the International Center for Photography in NYC (during a torrential and dangerous downpour; more on that later!) with lines snaking around the corner to 7th Avenue to see Viggo Mortensen. In addition to acting, Mr. Mortensen is an artist, musician and photographer. That evening as the skies darkened and rains and lightning started, Mr. Mortensen arrived and wouldn't start the signing until the Museum could accommodate almost all of us in the safety of shelter from the storm. I purchased the book, tried not to babble, and received a great and wonderful hug in return (he smelled good too). Alas, no photo! Thanks for sharing such a great blog post. xo

  32. @Jinny- Lucky, indeed. And we only had to wait a bazillion hours to meet him, lol!!! I have to give credit to the husband for volunteering to pick up two sets of kids so that MK and I could stay the entire time!!!

BTW I loved watching re-runs of the Monkees. One of the kids' networks currently has a show modeled after it ( At least in my opinion). :)

    Thanks for stopping by!

    ReplyDelete
  33. @Samantha YES!!! Bridget Jones' Diary. That sweater, lol!!!

Tina Turner- how cool is that!

And I think Bill Clinton gets around, hee!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  34. @mujerluminosa- I think my favorite movie that Viggo was in was Hildalgo. There's just something about a man and his horse. ;)

Great to hear he was so nice! I much rather hear(read) those kind of stories than when celebs are being not so...nice.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  35. Regina -I LOVE Matthew MacFadyen! I actually just watched P&P again last night. I told DH that I was doing research. He rolled his eyes, but was sweet and watched it (for the 100th time) with me again. Katherine-I am jealous. L.L.Cool J?! Did he have his shirt on? I hope not. ;D Sabrina- does that story I told you this weekend make you feel better, about how I got all fan-girl when I met you the first time? Hee, hee...see? Somewhere out there is someone saying "Sabrina Jeffries TALKED to me!" :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. Olivia, it helped, but it didn't make up for not meeting Colin. Just sayin' *G*

You know, I've met lots of writers through the years--I didn't even mention those. I guess I take writers for granted. I've met Margaret Atwood, Ursula LeGuin, Jorge Luis Borges, Allen Ginsberg, and a whole raft of romance writers.

But actors, not a one. Why is that?

    ReplyDelete
  37. @olivia- I think I did the same thing when I met Sabrina. Luckily, she's super nice! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Sabrina- writers are celebrities in my book. I was so nervous when I met Rachel Gibson. Remember my I LOVE YOUo? She probably thought I was crazy!!!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow. I'm so relived to hear he's nice! Those are the best pictures ever. Thanks for sharing your wonderful adventure!

  40. @Gillian- Aren't those the best? Colin is dreamy!!

  42. I can't believe I'm so late to comment on this -- how awesome is it that you guys got to meet (and HUG!!!) Colin?!?! (We're totally on a first-name basis, just FYI) However, I'm totally with Samantha G on this one -- Mr. Darcy isn't my "thang" but I LOVE Mark Darcy from Bridget Jones -- one of my favorite movies of all time...and Love, Actually is up there on the list too.

    As for celebs I've met...

Well, when you're a New Yorker, you're totally expected to play it cool when you see a celebrity because they come here to "live" and if you go all ape-sh*t on them, it ruins it for all New Yorkers. I've gone psycho fan-girl on a couple of Broadway stars (Lea Salonga and Audra McDonald) but movie stars, I let them go about their beeswax...here's my list...

Cynthia Nixon (I've seen her often at restaurants, walking her kids home from school, etc..)

    Matt Dillon

    Hamish Linklater

Rider Strong (he's a friend of my college friend who TOTALLY embarrassed me by telling Rider that I was a huge fan of Boy Meets World and basically hinting that I wanted to jump his bones...what?!?! I mean...gah!)

Bob from Sesame Street (Okay, I totally went ape-sh*t for Bob...he was getting an honorary doctorate at my school and I practically molested him in the hall)

And most recently, we saw Matt Damon at a pumpkin patch way out in Jersey. Totally random! I was close enough to kiss him, but again, I was forced to play it cool. Stupid New York.

Oh, and can we talk about the fact that Erin is RELATED TO a Hollywood star??? You may know him as "the dead guy" from Hawaii 5-0, or as Seth from Brothers & Sisters.

    ReplyDelete
  43. OMG, OMG! I love Colin Firth! I'm so jealous!! What a lucky girl (girls) you are!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. @Jerrica-that's quite a list, you jaded New Yorker you!! :)

And don't forget Erin's b-i-l was also on MTV! :)

Maybe you should do a post on celeb sightings!!

    Thanks for stopping by!

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Marie-It was a great adventure! :)

    Thanks for stopping by!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wait...I forgot Mark Paul Gossaler (sp?? Either way, I totally met Zack from SBtB!!) and President Obama, before he was prezie :)

  47. What a nice, "zingy" summary of our Colin adventure. I laughed out loud many times, especially at being called an intrepid instigator! That's a first! I feel honored that you feel that way but I think it was your uncanny ability to know just where to stand or not stand so we got the best shots and of course, got to meet the one and only Colin Firth. I still can't believe that it really happened but I'm so glad it did. I haven't acted like a giddy teenager in a long time. Speaking of teenage years, the only other celebrity I met was Judd Nelson at the beach when I was in high school. But that can't compare to Colin baby! And to answer your last question-all of Colin's movies are wonderful and the bestest, duh! : )

    ReplyDelete
  48. @MK!!!! So glad you had fun that day and reading my blog. And that you're still speaking to me. hee!

As for my uncanny ability...well, there's an app for that. ;p

Can't wait to see where your next phone call will lead us next!!! XO

  49. I kinda met Andy Griffin at the local grocery, a nod of hi, he likes his privacy. But meeting Sabrina Jeffries, one of my favortie writers was soooooo awesome! I did love Colin Firth as Mr Darcy, you guys were just so lucky!! Also looking forward to knowing a future famous author!

  50. Pauly Shore. Don't act like you're not impressed. ;)

And, btw, I was all *squee* when I saw your pic. I met my fave band of the 90s, Stroke 9 and was tickled to JUST get a photo... Until we hung out in the VIP room with them for the remainder of the night and Luke bought me a beer. *faints*

Very, VERY cool that you got a pic with him!

    ReplyDelete
  51. These pictures are so so awesome -- and you got lucky, he saved the best for you! Congrats on being unabashed in your fandom, it paid off!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ps. I have been lucky enough to meet many stars -- but the one who I still am dying to actually talk with is Tom Hanks. I brushed his arm in a crowd at a party once, and he smelled soooo good! The most awesome person I got to meet and chat with (and shake hands with) was Gregory Peck. And then there was the time I sat on Kirk Douglas's lap...

    ReplyDelete
  53. You are so lucky girls! Colin is perfect, lovely and I'm happy to know that he is attentive to his fans. I hope to have the opportunity to meet him someday, I love this man! ^^ <3
