Febutante Jillian Stone

Nearly Wed host, Beau Brummell, bounds on stage in all his tonsorial splendor. “The next contestants are brought to you by Jillian Stone, debut author of An Affair with Mr. Kennedy. The handsome couple on the cover of this edgy Victorian romance...” Beau primps a few curls. “...currently occupy neighboring flats in Belgravia, London. He’s the stoic, brilliant Scotland Yard detective Mr. Zeno “Zak” Kennedy, thwarter of deadly bomb plots against Victorian London. And she’s the lovely young widow, Cassandra St. Cloud, Impressionist painter and free-thinker who enjoys trying Mr. Kennedy with all manner of shocking behaviors.”
Beau nods a bow. “Mrs. St. Cloud?”

“I prefer Cassandra or Cassie.” Her gaze slides to the imposing man beside her. “It took a rescue in a rainstorm to get Zak to use the familiar.”

Zak raises a brow. “I was wheedled into it––along with those charm lessons.”

Cassie laughs. “My coaxing worked, didn’t it? Besides, I discovered you could be quite charming when you made the effort, Zak.”

“Shall we begin, then?” Hand on his hip, elbow out, Beau turns to Detective Kennedy. “Which aspect of your anatomy did Cassie say first caught her eye?”

Zak stares hard at Beau Brummell. “I might have expected a sordid question from an entertainment venue where couples are encouraged to reveal inappropriate and intimate things about one another––”

Cassie interjects, “Zak, darling, try making light of the situation.”

“All right then.” Shoulders back, he straightens. “Cassie was likely captivated by my mind, though I believe she would endeavor to shock me with something more––”

“Like this?” Cassie turns over her card which reads: HIS BUM. Studying the frown on his face she snorts a laugh. “Did we not ride together the first morning we met? I remember very well, you posted the fast trot and your coat tails flew up, and...” She smiles at him. “I could hardly take my eyes off you.”

Beau flashes a smile. “So much for brilliant deductions––shall we push on? What behavior of yours, Cassie, would Zak say is the most shocking?

Cassie draws her bottom lip under pearly white uppers. “Give me a moment¬¬.”

Zak checks his pocket watch. “Take your time, dear, there are so many––”

She brightens. “My latest is bicycle riding in bloomers. But, I believe Zak would say my occasional puff on a cigar...”

Zak turns over the card with the words: HER FRENCH TATTOO

Cassie’s eyes grow wide and her mouth drops open. “You didn’t.”

Zak grins. “Come, come, Cassie. You are such a wonderfully shocking fiancée––might I share those colorful cursive words?”

Cassie squirms a little. “Well, as long as you don’t reveal where it’s located...”

Zak chuckles. “La douleur passe, la beauté reste––The pain passes but the beauty remains.

“All right then––we stand at nil and naught.” Beau tallies up the score.

“Nil and naught? Some kind of archaic cipher...” Zak muses.

Cassie pulls Zak close and nuzzles. “Shall we do a bit of...decoding, darling?”

Beau leaps in front of the kissing couple. “Leave a comment or question for Zak or Cassie and be entered into the drawings for Jillian Stone’s An Affair with Mr. Kennedy as well the grand prize drawing for a Kindle...and please do so quickly before these two––” Beau sneaks a peek behind his back and returns, eyes bulging. “Next contestants, please!”

One lucky commenter will win a copy of AN AFFAIR WITH MR. KENNEDY. And all U.S. commenters will be eligible to win a free Kindle! YOU DON'T HAVE TO ASK A QUESTION TO ENTER, BUT WE NEED YOUR NAME.

  12. Dear Jane,

At first meeting I believe it was Cassandra's silver grey eyes that captivated. Then my gaze dropped to her mouth, which is rather over-sized and not particularly fashionable, yet my interest lingered...if you follow. ;) Zak

  13. Zak and Cassie, your personalities seem to jump right off the pages. I can feel the chemistry though you two may coy about admitting it.

    1. Huge chemistry between these two, and growing affection. Even at the end of the novel, their affection continues to evolve...how perverse am I to write that? %) I wanted to leave the reader with the idea that their sizable love was just beginning to blossom!

Plus, as the Gentlemen of Scotland Yard series continues, Zak Kennedy is a continuing supporting character. So readers receive updates on the couple!

Mr. Kennedy was fun to write because he is one of those still- waters-run-deep sort of men. Stoic, introspective, eccentric, but there is this fire that burns in him... ;) Need I say more?

  20. I loved this post! Congratulations on your debut, Jillian! I definitely need to get my hands on this book. And I love the cover too!

As for my question... gosh that's a really tough one - and so many good ones were already asked!

    My question to the couple:
    What's the most interesting/fun thing you've done ... excluding the obvious? ;)

And then to Zak specifically... When/how did you realize you were in love?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Cassie: "Oh my, well, the most exciting time was when I was followed to Paris by the anarchists with Zak in hot pursuit. Very thrilling that––what with my gallery show in Paris and Zak after the leader of the dynamiters."

Zak: "And there was a bit more adventure once we returned to London, but I don't wish to be a plot spoiler––not for the novel, anyway.

"As to when I fell in love with Cassie, it was likely right around the time I was captured by the anarchists. I thought that I might never see her lovely face again."

    1. The words of the tattoo are in French. It is a quote from Edgar Degas, who was an Impressionist painter (as Cassie is in the story). I think words are also fitting for a tattoo, because the pain does pass and the beauty remains!
