The Lady Scribes are happy to welcome Anna Randol, debut author of A Secret in Her Kiss. Anna lives with her family in Southern California. She writes sultry, adventurous Regency romances for Avon. Her debut novel, A Secret In Her Kiss, is set in Constantinople and earned a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly, who called it a “...masterful debut…[that] spins a tale replete with mystery, espionage, and memorable romance.” When she’s not plotting fun, sexy storylines, Anna’s usually eating dark chocolate, having wild dance parties with her kids in the living room, or remodeling her house one ill-planned project at a time. She loves hearing from readers at her website http://www.annarandol.com/ or on Twitter at @AnnaRandol!
Hero or Zero: A Quick Reference for Heroines
We all know how it is—by Chapter One you’re already engaged to a man. But with all the things a romance heroine has to juggle (spy work, raising siblings, lost treasures) it’s hard for a woman to know if she’s found her true love. To simplify things and save time, I’ve compiled a simple quiz.
1. Is the man in your life:
A. Selected by your overbearing father, or a lecher old enough to be your father?
B. A childhood friend, pleasant, dull but safe?
C. Dark, tortured, and misunderstood?
2. A stable boy spooks your man’s horse. Does he:
A. Beat the lad with a riding crop?
B. Get flustered and out of sorts?
C. Offer the malnourished lad a position on his own staff?
3. When it comes to a discussion of marriage, your man:
A. Insists upon it immediately and is willing to use force to see it happen.
B. Content to do his duty but not interested in anything more romantic.
C. Shies away from it because he knows it is too important to take lightly.
4. When your man sees you riding astride in the park, he:
A. Goes straight to your father with threats.
B. Worries what his mother will say if word gets out, but swears he won’t be the one to tell her.
C. Berates you for your lack of groom but then challenges you to a race.
5. Describe his kiss.
A. Like two fat slugs sliding over your skin.
B. Brief, chaste.
C. Sweet mercy, my head's spinning too much to expound on it.
If your answers are mostly ‘A’s:
This man is not your hero. In fact, he is most likely the villain. If there are any suspicious deaths in the recent past, I would look closely at this fellow.
If your answers are mostly ‘B’s:
This man is also not your hero. He is most likely the placeholder until the real hero comes along. You may break his heart when you leave him, but he will understand and want you to be happy. There is also the strong possibility that he’s just fallen in love with one of your best friends but doesn’t have the heart to tell you.
If your answers are mostly ‘C’s:
This is your hero! Despite what society thinks of him, he truly has a sensitive, caring heart. He just needs the right woman to come along and see it. If you’re concerned about his reckless ways, fear not. He’ll change them after meeting you. Also, there is a good chance it was all a ruse to cover his career as a spy.
A rare beauty, raised in the exotic heart of the Ottoman Empire, Mari Sinclair knows it’s time to end her career as a British spy when she narrowly avoids a brush with death. Unfortunately her employers think otherwise—and they are not above using blackmail to keep Mari in the Game.
Saddled with a handsome, duty-obsessed “minder” to ensure that she completes—and survives—one last mission, Mari is incensed…for her guardian, Major Bennett Prestwood, is simply too dedicated, too unbending, and too disarmingly attractive. But in the face of dark secrets and deadly treacheries, as the true peril to Mari is slowly revealed, loyal soldier Bennett realizes that, to save and win this extraordinary woman, he will have to do the unthinkable and break the rules—rules that passion and desire have suddenly, irrevocably changed.
