It's all about Duck Dynasty and Beards

Right now in our household, there are two things that are hot topics: Duck Dynasty and Beards.

Although some might argue (and be right) that you can't separate the two, I will. First, a little background on Duck Dynasty. It's a show on cable, that centers around the Robertson family-immediate and extended that live in Louisiana. They own a duck call making company and like to hunt anything that moves that they can also eat.

Some family members, like Uncle Si, for instance are known for their one-liners:

Hey, there are 20 million people in this world and you expect me to know one?

If I pop you with this, you're fixing to be numb.and that's why they call them numb-chucks.

What kind of world are we living in where you take a samurai sword to a pawn shop and they can't fix it?

Now onto beards, which you might have noticed the four dudes in the picture have in spades. Well, Hot Builder, in honor of D squared, has challenged his two brothers to a beard growing contest. Today is the last day they can shave until April 8th. One of the brothers is complaining because his job requires a clean shaved face-silly military rules.

So, when I blog again in April, I'll post pictures of Hot Builder and his beard, as well as his younger brothers and their beards, or lack their of.  Although, I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole thing. While WiT, our oldest, has told her daddy that he is NOT allowed to grow his hair out all long and crazy.  <G>

Here's a fun clip from Duck Dynasty's official YouTube channel, where the guys talk about their beards:

So,  have you ever watched Duck Dynasty?

  1. LOL. Umm... nope, never watched it, never heard of it. And - um - it doesn't look like my thing. But it'll be interesting to see what Hot Builder and his brothers do with their facial hair in a month. ;)

    1. LOL! It is pretty redneck, Ava. But the guys on there truly love their wives and do anything for them. Plus the dynamic between the men of the family is fabulous to watch just as a writer. ;)

As for HB...it'll be interesting all right, lol. ;)

  2. In Michigan, November 15th is the "High Holy Day" (aka., the start of rifle season for deer hunting). That's usually when we start to see beards and mustaches appearing because men refuse to shave for the month of "Movember." So imagine my surprise when all these beards started popping up at random times. And not just stylish goatees and such. HUGE, BUSHY, LOSE-A-SMALL-CHILD-IN-THE-FOLLICLES beards. I did what any writer did: I tweeted OMGWFTBBQ and then posted a question on Facebook asking OMGWTFBBQ. ;-) The answer that came back universally? Duck Dynasty. Oi. So glad once again that I don't watch television.

    1. That's awesome Jennelle. I thought the south had a lock on hunting, but hey, it's good to know when other parts of the country do the same "strange" things. (BTW I love venison...don't tell.)

And did you notice the Oscars this year?! Don't think Zach Gafilcantpsellhislastname was the big influence, since he's been around for so long. ;)

    2. Hunting is huge in lots of rural states. People go nuts in Wisconsin during hunting season. One thing I never saw in the south was a dead deer strapped on top of a car or in the back of a pick-up truck. That's a sight I haven't gotten used to in my 15 years living in Wisconsin. ICK!

  3. Oh boy, my DH is in LOVE with Duck Dynasty...and it seems like there is ALWAYS a marathon on. And now he's taking to quoting the show... oi vey! I've watched it several times to 'support' my hubby who is good enough to watch America's Next Top Model and Project Runway with me. Though it's hardly on my "must-dvr" list, I do think it is sweet to see this unconventional, extended family interacting. PS Did you see the one when they went in to speak at Career Day with the kids at the private school? That was HYSTERICAL!

    1. I haven't seen that episode yet, Christi. We are watching on the show's website. But I did see the one where Si was Santa's Elf. WOW. ;)

  4. I've never seen it, but I've heard you talk about it! My dh does love those Gold Rush shows, and anything to do with Alaska, so he'd probably like this one too.

Fun with the beards! My brother in law does the hunting season beard too. We stopped going home for Thanksgiving because the whole weekend is really just a new holiday: 'getting the deer stands ready' In PA they finally started giving the first day of deer season off school as a holiday because most of the boys didn't show up.

    1. It's a great show and unlike some other reality shows, there aren't beeps covering up every other word. Nice for a change. ;)

      A holiday, really? That's cool.

  5. I didn't even know this show existed. Where have I been? I can't believe how good looking that one guy was without his beard!!! That's just a shame. LOL

My hubby has a beard, but he trims it regularly. He's had it for so long, he looks like a different man when he shaves. It's kind of shocking when he walks in sans beard. But he would totally win in a beard growing contest because his whiskers grow so fast. Not that I want him to take part in a contest. ;)

    1. I know, right! I'd like for all of them to shave their beards. Alas, the show wouldn't be the same without those beards. I think they are characters all on their own. ;)

  6. Oh my. I've never seen any of this show. I heard people talking about Duck Dynasty, and silly me, I assumed it had something to do with Duck Tales (you know, the Disney cartoon?). I had no clue it was something related to weird guys with long, ugly beards. LOL.

So...yeah, I'm thinking Hot Builder's brother in the military might have a difficult time getting away with the whole beard-growing challenge. Good luck to him. LOL. This feels like the hockey tradition of growing playoff beards...where the guys don't shave until their team is out of contention. Since the playoffs go on for about two months, some of those guys are pretty hairy by the end of it.

    1. For the longest time, Catherine, I did too. LOL!

Oh I'm sure they are. I wonder just how hairy HB and his bros will get in only a month.

  7. LOL! I can't wait for these pics. To bad your BiL can't take a month of leave to grow this lovely beard. Anyways, I have never heard of this show and I don't know if I would watch this show. May the best beard wins *snorts*

    1. I love this show, Melody. The one-liners are hilarious and just I *die* watching it with HB.

Yeah, I can't wait to post pics of the after HB. :)

  8. I've never watched Duck Dynasty even though most of my 8th graders insist I'm missing out. ;/ I'm very curious to see who will win the beard growing contest! Can't wait for those pictures! ;}
