Kids Today

Last Saturday, my almost 9 year old daughter had a birthday party (her real birthday is actually on Easter this year, hence the "almost 9"). And let me tell you: Oh what a difference a year makes!

For her eighth birthday, she wanted everything that was Pink! Sparkly! Girlie!. Easy-peasy, right? Well, this year, mai babeh has decided that pink is no longer her favorite color, One Direction is her most favorite band evah and she wants iTunes money to buy songs for her iPod.

And that sweet child o' mine had the nerve to tell she wouldn't like Mumford&Sons, until she was in college or 35!  Seriously, people, how can you not like M&S?

EEEP! ACK! WHAAAAAH! *sniff*

Deep down I knew this day was coming. After all I had major crushes on these guys:

And later on, when I wasn't in elementary school, these guys were IT:

WiT (woman-in-training) turned her nose up at these two groups, but at least (thank GOD) she asks me to sing along with her to this:

That means she's still my baby, right?

So, what are the kids in your life into when it comes to music?

  1. Marquita ~ My teenage son has fairly eclectic tastes. (This comes from having a father who is a composer and pretty vocal with his opinions about contemporary music.) I've heard my boy say things like "There hasn't been any decent music since the 80s." He prefers bands like RUSH or the BEATLES.

    1. Hahaha... That's funny! I do like Rush and The Beatles, though. :)

    2. LOL! That's so awesome, Ava. This musical er, decline in my daughter's taste has been fairly recent. When she was little she loved Paul Simon, John Mayer and Johnny Cash.

      I don't know what happened! ;)

  2. My 15 year old son is into Cage the Elephant and Weezer. I guess they are considered alternative rock. I'm not a huge Weezer fan, but overall I like his music choices.

My daughter is into Black-eyed Peas, Pink, Katy Perry and pretty much anything mainstream pop. She can't stand slow songs.

The only band they really agree on is ACDC, which cracks me up. They love them. :)

    1. Oh I love Weezer, Samantha. I'll have to look up Cage the Elephant on You Tube. Sounds interesting?! ;)

Yeah, my daughter loves those groups too. No slow songs for her. She was complaining about a Bruno Mars song the other day.

That's awesome. Both of my kids love Stone Temple Pilots-I blame my husband.

  3. My daughter is six, and her favorite song is "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles. We are trying to ingrain excellent taste in music in her from a young age, but I know the boy band era is not too far away. Oh well. I was an NKOTB fan too back then. ;)

    1. Have you seen the movie, Across The Universe, Lily? It wouldn't be for your daughter. I love their take on the Beatles.

Yeah, we tried that too with WiT. Hopefully all that really good music will make it's way into her iPod frequent play list. ;)

BTW it was hard to decide which song to grab for NKOTB!

  4. My 19 year old daughter loves Avicii, Passion Pit (don't you love that name?)and God knows what else. My almost 16 year old son also like alternative or indie music.
However, four years ago, we all did a video of Hanna Montana's "Hoe Down, Throw Down" which they swear to blackmail me with one day. I live in fear...

    1. Oh my, Nancy. Wait, blackmail you?! I see future wedding montage. Their future spouse really needs to know about them throwing down with HM. ;)

  5. Marquita,
I'm relieved to say my girls are still outwardly pretending to hate boys, so no boy bands right now. However, I do catch them trying to watch Big Time Rush occasionally and since those boys make me want to smash the TV, they change it immediately. My oldest adores Selena Gomez and my other girl just likes anything that makes her shake her booty. I guess we're not music connoisseurs here. ;/

    1. LMAO, Andris! My son hated Big Time Rush. He wanted to smash the TV too. When I explained to him that was essentially a modern reboot of The Monkees, he could handle it the teensiest bit better. :)

    2. I despise that show with a passion ignited in the depths of Hell's colon. Maybe more. Especially that disgustingly repulsive manager/agent. I'm getting mad just thinking of that guy!

    3. Thank God, WiT has moved on from that show! And I loved The Monkees. Now she watches Shake It Up, Wizards, H2O and iCarly.

  6. The Monster Boy is all about LMFAO, in particular Party Rock. That, he tells me, is the best song ever on the face of the planet. He also likes I'm Sexy and I Know It. Both of which give me the shudders. LOL.

    1. Catherine, my 5 YO, loves them too. Maybe it's the beat? LOL! You do have to wonder what makes them like particular songs though. They can't understand most of the lyrics.

  7. You my children have no say on music. They will listen to whatever I listen to. However, my child has groan when I'm in a country mood. However, she'll sing along if its a song she knows like Train, Maroon 5, FUN., even Mumford & Son. All depends what I'm in the mood in.

    1. Oh the radio in the car is mine, Melody. But WiT will ask if she can change it. Usually I don't care, b/c she asks so nicely. Oh yeah, Maroon 5 is especially liked in our house. :)

WiT does like the song Brand New Girlfriend. :)

  8. My two have completely opposite taste in music, which means I usually pick so I don't have to listen to them squabble. Goofy songs are one of my favorite torture devices. :-)

    1. Good call, Deb. Luckily, WiT and her brother like the same things. But I'm not sure how much is that her telling him he likes it, lol!
