To Costume. . . Or Not to Costume

So, both of my children were practically born with a prop in their hand, and an affinity for costumes.  Of any sort.  After Eldest first watched The Little Mermaid, he carried a yellow plastic fork around for three weeks, insisting to all that it was his trident. Later,  movies could not be watched without first assembling the props.  Jammies were no fun unless they also doubled as costumes.

Halloween, as you might guess, was always a Big Deal around here, and costumes usually reflected their latest obsessions.  Valiant Husband and I have dressed up several times through the years. Some of the families around here go all out and all dress up in a family theme, but we've never gone that far.

Now that the kids are a little older, they have gravitated to cosplay.  We have a couple of local Cons that they've dressed for.  Elaborately.  This is no 'throw it together' endeavor.  They take this stuff seriously, planning for months ahead of time and making everything they can by hand.  They are dying because this weekend is Dragon Con and I still haven't taken them to one.  Now there is a TV show about professional cosplayers that is setting them afire to go more, do more, create more.

Some of my friends like to dress up, but others are self avowed 'not costume' people--and wouldn't consider dressing up for any reason.  It does seem to be a love it or hate it sort of activity, doesn't it?
So which are you?  Do you dress up for Halloween?  Has your family ever dressed together in a theme?  Ever gone to a Anime or Comic Con?  What's your best costume?

  1. I'll dress up occasionally for Halloween, but that's generally the extent of my costume wearing. Any time I've thought about doing it at any other time, I'm reminded of the scene in Legally Blonde where they play a trick on Elle, and she's the only one in costume. I'm certain that'll happen to me, so I chicken out. :)

    1. LOL--I never thought of that...until it sort of happened to us...We were invited to a Halloween party--and we were the only ones dressed up! I was like....What the What?!! It's a HALLOWEEN party!

    2. LOL! I always think of the Tarts and Vicars party in Bridget Jones' Diary! I love that scene!

    3. Jerrica- That scene did come to mind for me too.

    4. That scene totally came into my head when we were at that party! But I was okay with it...we had the spirit of the holiday!

  2. I like to dress up for RT and Halloween, but my biggest complaint about Halloween costumes is how skimpy they are. I prefer to put a costume together than buy one, but it seems like I always run out of time.

    1. I know--why do all women's costumes have to sex kittenish? Ugh. Doing it yourself is better!

  3. I'm not really a costume person. I have worn one for RT, and occasionally for Halloween, but I'd rather not. I always feel silly.

When my son was younger, he was all into the costume stuff too. He had the Superman underoos that he would wear on the outside of his clothes. He had two pairs of blue pants. One royal blue that matched his shirt exactly and one that was slightly more navy. He would have a meltdown if he got the navy ones because Superman didn't wear THAT color.

    1. I know it's not really your thing, but you look fabulous in that ice blue Regency gown!

  4. I've been going to an annual Halloween party since I was in my late teens and there is always costume contest. It gets more and more difficult to come up with something original each year and rarely do you see store bought. My favorite was putting together Curella Deville. We've never done a family costume though. I have never gone to Comic Con but hubby and I have been watching Cosplay.

  5. I'd love to see pics of your costumes, Jane, I'll bet you come up with some fabulous stuff!

Yeah, the cosplay show is firing them up! I wish I could post some more pics of their more elaborate get ups!

  6. We love dressing up! I was like your kids when I was little -- I wore princess gowns and tiaras wherever I went. Bella is the same way now.

We don't always dress up for Halloween -- that's a holiday that seems to sneak up on us. BUT, a couple years ago, when Bella was almost 2, we outdid ourselves. Eric was Mario, I was Princess Peach, and Bella was the cutest little Bowser you've ever seen. We were a big hit!

This year, we're doing another family theme -- we're going to dress up as The Croods. I'll be Eep, Eric will be Guy and Bella will be Baby Sandy -- we've been working on her growl all summer ;)

    1. Oh, that sounds like the perfect family theme for you guys! I can't wait to see pics of this year. I still haven't seen that movie!

  7. I love Halloween, but like Ava, I don't really care to dress up. It's too much pressure! Lol. My kids, of course, love to pick out expensive costumes for THAT ONE NIGHT. And no matter what, one of them will decide at the last minute they don't like their costume and then we invariably start our trick or treating fun with a mommy-child meltdown. Good times. Why do I like this holiday, again?
Oh yes--creepy things and candy. ;)

    1. Fingers crossed for a melt-down free year this time! :-)

Youngest has already started his for this year--Dr. Who, Matt Smith version.

  8. I'm not the costume person. Didn't like dressing up even when I was a kid, and when I decided to attend RT, made sure I wouldn't be the weird one out who didn't wear a costume.

But then I found this awesome corset dress that I so wanted but needed an excuse to buy. I am now wearing a costume at RT. So perhaps I just need the right (pretty!) motivation.

    Cute kiddies!

    1. Thank you, Terri! It's hard to remember when they were so little and sweet!

Oh, I'll be at RT too. Can't wait to see your outfit! I have to find a pirate wench or gypsy type costume. I figured they'll be out soon and I can start putting stuff together..

    2. Mine will be a sexy pirate. (I actually typed that with a straight face. Heh.) Still have to accessorize but I'm looking forward to that. A friend is going to make me a great pirate fascinator type thing with a lovely plume.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Also can't wait to see New Orleans. I've never been.

    3. It will be my first time too! We should go drink a Hurricane together to commemorate! :-)

  9. Deb, is the blue costume in the 2nd pic a blue power ranger? I think we had that costume too. My boys grew out of wearing costumes and are too self-conscious to dress up anymore. I'll tell you a secret: My 13yr old still gets out props when the Star Wars and LOTR movies are on.

  10. Yes, Blue Power Ranger--although I think he only watched that show twice in his life. It was the whole Ninja thing that seduced him, I think. :-)

Mine don't get their props out anymore, but Youngest will head to his room after a favorite movie and 'rearrange' his memorabilia. :-)

  11. Great memories, Deb! The late dh and I dressed up every year for Halloween (to greet trick-or-treaters who came to our house) and I continued the tradition after he died. That's more than 35 years of costume fun. Over the past ten years, I've averaged about 100 kids every year. They (and their parents) love to come by to see what costume I'm wearing. I sold my house earlier this year and may have neglected to mention the Halloween tradition to the new owners. Surprise! ;-)

  12. Aww..I'll bet you'll be missed in so many ways, PJ. That will be a surprise for the new owners.

But now you get a chance to start a tradition in a new place. Fun! Plus, you can reuse all those costumes. :-)

  13. Let's see, I run a Star Trek club, so yeh, I have put on a uniform or two in my time. In fact, the local minor league baseball team called me up, and asked for us to come in costume on Friday.

I also do pirate (the theme for my Star Trek chapter is pirates) and I've done costume competitions over the years at cons.

Look foward to building a Steampunk outfit for RT2014 in NOLA! I've already started scoping out ideas.

    1. Hi Justicia!

Oh, Valiant Husband and I are huge TNG fans. That sounds like huge fun.

I swear, I want to wrtie a Steampunk just so I can get an outfit. :-)

    2. It will be! I'm wearing the Next Gen Skant and Pirate Gentleman is doing TOS Red Shirt. They are giving out GIANT foam Spock Hands too! How cool is that? Just wish it wasn't on DragonCon weekend-most of my crew has invaded Atlanta!

I tend to like all of the versions of Star Trek, but I do like Deep Space 9 the best, even though my favorite character is Dr. McCoy from Classic.

  14. Oh, I love Cosplays!!! They're awesome and freaking amazing! These folks that sew their own customs are hardcore and don't mess with them! They can cut you up with their hand made real looking weapons! I would love to attend an Anime or Comic Con. Sadly I never make it or more like I forget the dates. LOL But I think my best custom was an assassin ninja. I sewed it myself about five years ago and well I thought it was pretty sweet.

  15. Hi kipha. I admit, I was hesitant the first Con we went to, but we had such a good time and it is really fun to be around all that passion!
