Fall Favorites

I love autumn.  It's (usually) one of the best seasons in North Carolina, long and beautiful with gorgeous keep-your-windows open weather and amazing color.  We've got the beauty this year, even if the weather is holding out on us and giving us overcast, cloudy days.  But there are still plenty of reasons to love the fall--and here's a list of my (somewhat shallow but true) favorites:

1.  Fall food.

I'm not talking fair food, although the State Fair is going on right now and judging by my FB feed, lots of my friends are indulging in fried oreos, giant turkey legs and barbecue sandwiches with Krispy Kreme buns.  (Ugh)  Nope, I'm talking good, homemade comfort food for when the nights start coming earlier and the temps dip down in the evening.  We had pot roast tonight.  And that is one meal that every one of my picky eaters love.  Soups, chili, casseroles--and the baking!  Fall puts me in the mood to bake.  We've already been through a couple batches of chocolate chip pumpkin muffins this year and a big batch of cookies this week.

2.  This is where the weather would usually go, but see above.

3.  Fall TV!

Here's where the shallow comes in, but I love veggin' out with a good TV series, and the fall season is always fun after the summer drought.  I'm digging Castle again, now that they are back in NYC.  I just enjoyed the finale of Project Runway last week.  I've recently discovered Face Off, which is fun.  We love The Big Bang Theory and I'm enjoying trying out some new shows to see if they stick--still up in the air about Sleepy Hollow, but I'm hooked on Orange is the New Black.

4.  Fall clothes.

Am I the only one who loves to dig out the long sleeves, the yoga pants and the soft cashmere sweaters after shorts weather?  I love switching seasons in clothes..it's like a whole new beloved wardrobe every few months.

5.  Costumes

We are a costume family and Halloween is the perfect excuse to go gangbusters!   The kids and I have been working on our costumes and having a grand time.

So there you have my faves!  Will you share yours?  What's your favorite fall food?  Do you love yoga pants?  Costumes?  The hot guy who plays Ichabod Crane?  Spill, please!

  1. Fall is my favorite season! I love, love, love it! This year I'm loving The Originals because I love a dark, brooding, bad boy (in fiction). I'm also enjoying AHS- Coven.

Honestly, my office is soooo cold that I often wear fall clothes year-round. I even have fingerless gloves and and a shawl to don whenever I have to go to my Canadian boss' office (He keeps it chillier than the rest of the building in there.)

  2. Oooh, I don't know what The Originals is...spill! :-)

I'm sorry you have to work in wintry conditions! But now we both have those nice fleece poncho/jackets! :-)

    1. I'm not sure if you'd like The Originals. It's the spin-off of The Vampire Diaries. BUT so much darker and better. :)

    2. You know the question I have to ask: Are they in high school? :-)

    3. OMG! Who cares if they're in high school?!?! That's just when they TURNED! But they're really old!! :) And the Originals is the ORIGINAL vampire family -- they're all older -- no teens, except the couple who came over from TVD. Even so...they're all in their 30s playing teens. lol.

  3. Now that you've got me thinking about pot roast, I might just have to go to the store and find the perfect one to put in my crock pot. That'll be good to help me remember to eat. LOL. I'm in one of those writing zones where time passes, and I'm just busy working without thinking about food until I'm ravenous. The smell of a pot roast in my crock pot, though? That'd help me to remember. :)

    1. Yay for the zone! Actually, a big roast is a great idea, because it will feed you easily for several days of zone writing. On the rare occasions I get to be alone and concentrate on work, I make something like that, something easily heated so I never have to think about it. I can't do more than a few days of that intensity before I have to come up for air, but boy are they productive!

    2. Exactly! So now that I've come up for air again, I'm heading to the store to find one. LOL. (I've had three days of the zone, and it looks like it's still going, so I'm going to take full advantage of it.)

  4. Fall is my bestest, most favoritest, awesome time of the year! Yes, I used made up words. ;) I enjoy the TV and love the changing weather, but it's all about the cozy clothes for me. I stole my husband's sweats four or five years ago, and he's never gotten them back. And he won't. Not without a fight anyway. ;)

  5. You are going to have to post a pic of you all curled up in those famous sweats, Andris! I know you'll look adorable--you always do!

  6. I'm super late to this, but I have to comment because I love fall...even though I live in FL. Actually, our weather is fall-like a good amount of the year. We hit those blissful 70 degree temps in November and we stay that way until April or May. It's AWESOME!

Okay, favorites...fall tv, of course. This is the time I get amped up about Vampire Diaries and, like Ava said, The Originals. Sleepy Hollow is too scary for me, though. I need my scary to at least be glossy and have an over abundance of abnormally beautiful people. lol.

Food...I'm a big chili fan. My mom always made chili on Halloween night, and I plan to carry on that tradition. And everything pumpkin! Mmmm! Snickerdoodles. Cider, hot chocolate, anything that includes clove, cinnamon, nutmeg.

And then there's all the activities! I've actually got this Saturday planned down to the minute with 4 different Halloween festivals. Hayrides, pumpkin picking, etc..the whole bit :)

    Happy Fall!

  7. I usually love fall, but out colors aren't that great this year. It is strange. I love the brilliant reds, oranges and golds but it is not really taking place. I also love sweaters and sweatshirts and sitting outside by a fire. S'mores and hot chocolate taste better in the fall too. I am loving Sleepy Hollow and I was already addicted to Face Off. Another new show I like is Black List, but I can't watch The Coven. As for costumes, I have a party Saturday night and still have no clue what hubby and I are dressing up as. This doesn't usually happen to me. I've got the costume version of writers block happening.

    1. Us, too, Jane!!! We just can't decide what to be! We DID have a plan, but Bella foiled it. Darn kid. lol

  8. I've been wanting to watch Black List, but it's up against Castle and I think Valiant Husband is already DVRing something else then. I'm going to watch for the Season on Netflix...

Jerrica--weren't you going to go as the Croods?
